AFC And Epson Australia Launch Smart Factory Feasibility Study

The Australian Fashion Council (AFC) has collaborated with Epson Australia for a new initiative to explore the creation of an AI-powered smart factory aimed at transforming Australia’s fashion manufacturing.

The two organisations are seeking a research partner to conduct a six-month feasibility study that will outline a blueprint for a pilot facility integrating digital design, textile printing, automation and AI for on-demand, sustainable garment production.

This follows AFC’s recent launch of a National Manufacturing Strategy for the fashion industry. The proposed smart factory would support local brands by enabling flexible, small-batch manufacturing, reducing waste and rebuilding domestic production capacity.

AFC CEO Jaana Quaintance-James said the project addresses critical industry challenges like supply chain disruption and skills shortages, while Epson MD Craig Heckenberg noted it would give brands of all sizes access to ethical, high-tech manufacturing.

The smart factory is envisioned as a key pillar in advancing Australia’s position as a leader in sustainable and innovative fashion.
