BASF To Start Zhanjiang Site By End-2025, Marks 140 Years In China

German chemical giant BASF is preparing to begin production at its landmark Verbund site in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province, by the end of 2025. The €10 billion project is one of BASF’s largest single investments globally and a cornerstone of its long-term strategy in China.
“We have high expectations for the Zhanjiang Verbund site, which is among our most important initiatives in the country,” said Mao Yu, Senior Marketing Manager at BASF Greater China, during a digital economy investment conference held in Huadu, Guangzhou.
Announced in July 2018 and officially launched in November 2019, the Zhanjiang project is being independently built and operated by BASF. Once operational, it will enhance BASF’s integrated production capabilities in China, supporting key industries across the region.
As BASF prepares for the launch, the company is also celebrating a major milestone 140 years of business in China. To commemorate the anniversary, BASF plans to host a special event in Guangzhou later this year.
“BASF’s journey in China began 140 years ago, when our synthetic dyes first arrived in Guangzhou before being distributed nationwide,” said Mao. “Today, with the rise of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Guangdong has become a global trade and manufacturing hub and a vital market for BASF.”
