Better Cotton Partners With TEXPROCIL To Promote Indian Cotton

Better Cotton has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (TEXPROCIL) of India to promote high-quality, sustainable Indian cotton on the global stage.

This partnership builds on TEXPROCIL’s initiative, launched in collaboration with the Government of India and the Ministry of Textiles, to introduce ‘Kasturi Cotton’—India’s first branded cotton designed to showcase premium fibre quality.

Combining Better Cotton’s sustainability standards with Kasturi Cotton’s focus on high-quality fibre, this collaboration aims to highlight the synergy between sustainability and quality in cotton production. By aligning with both the Better Cotton and Kasturi Cotton standards, cotton producers can access higher value and expand their market opportunities.

Jyoti Narain Kapoor, Director of Better Cotton’s India Programme, said, “This collaboration will spotlight on Indian cotton’s impressive credentials and create opportunities for companies to secure better prices by aligning with both standards.”

Dr Siddhartha Rajagopal, Executive Director at TEXPROCIL, stated, “Together, we will elevate Indian cotton, shaping the future of cotton production in India by uniting sustainability and quality standards.”

The MoU outlines a joint effort to promote the Kasturi Cotton standard across Better Cotton’s network, encouraging cotton producers to demonstrate the high quality of their sustainable cotton. TEXPROCIL will provide training to Better Cotton Member gins interested in aligning with the Kasturi Cotton programme and engage its network of over 2,000 companies in India’s textile manufacturing regions to increase awareness and participation in the sustainability initiative.

In return, Better Cotton aims to engage more cotton gins, advocate for sustainable cotton sourcing and boost adoption of both standards within India’s cotton supply chains. Together, Better Cotton and TEXPROCIL will organize workshops to educate cotton gins on the benefits of sustainability in cotton production and the advantages of aligning with their respective programmes.
