The global home textiles industry, a key pillar of the broader textile sector, is a rich blend of craftsmanship, innovation and economic significance. Encompassing products like bed linens, table linen, toilet linen, kitchen linen, carpets, curtains and furnishing articles, it caters to homes worldwide with designs rooted in tradition and modernity. Known for its emphasis on sustainability and innovative manufacturing practices, the sector faced notable shifts in 2023, as both market dynamics and global challenges reshaped its trajectory.
In 2023, the global exports of home textiles stood at US$ 57,017.76 million, a 3.30% decline compared to the previous year. Despite the drop, the industry remained a crucial driver of international trade. The bed, table, toilet and kitchen linen category took the lead, contributing US$ 22,753.29 million, or 40% of total exports, even as it saw a decline of 6.08%. Carpets and textile floor coverings followed closely, accounting for 30% of the total exports at US$ 17,170.48 million, with only a marginal dip of 0.50%.
While some categories faced headwinds, the home textiles sector continued to reflect the resilience of its key players. China, India, and Türkiye showcased varying degrees of adaptability, positioning themselves as dominant suppliers across categories.
China: The Undisputed Leader
China solidified its status as the largest exporter of home textiles, commanding 41% of global exports, valued at US$ 23,102.68 million in 2023. Its dominance extended across all major categories, with bed, table, kitchen and toilet linen being the most exported products, worth US$ 9,532.73 million, with a slight decline of 0.79%. Blankets were the second-most exported category, contributing US$ 4,418.53 million to China’s total exports.
China’s largest market, the United States, imported US$ 6,897.91 million worth of Chinese home textiles, though this represented a 0.97% decline. Japan followed with US$ 1,682.06 million, but imports plummeted by 10.90%, reflecting a significant shift in demand. Australia, the third-largest destination, recorded imports of US$ 803.96 million, down 7.68%.
India: A Strong Contender In Competitive Market
India maintained its position as the second-largest exporter, contributing US$ 5,796.98 million, despite witnessing a 7% decline in 2023. Carpets and textile floor coverings led India’s exports, valued at US$ 1,926.06 million, accounting for 33% of the country’s total home textiles exports. Other furnishing articles followed at US$ 1,848.33 million, while bed, table, toilet and kitchen linen came in third at US$ 1,794.25 million, with an 11.59% decline.
The United States remained India’s largest market, importing US$ 3,384.97 million, which represented a 4.72% drop. The United Kingdom and Germany rounded out the top three, with imports of US$ 261.01 million and US$ 238.34 million, respectively. Interestingly, Türkiye emerged as a growing market for Indian home textiles, with exports totaling US$ 438.80 million, despite a 5.34% decline.
Türkiye: The Rising Star in Home Textiles
Türkiye surpassed Pakistan to become a prominent player in the global home textiles arena, with exports totaling US$ 4,388.05 million in 2023, albeit with a 5.34% decline. Carpets and textile floor coverings dominated Türkiye’s exports, contributing 64% of its total at US$ 2,814.09 million, with a minimal drop of 0.19%.
Interestingly, Saudi Arabia emerged as a standout market for Türkiye, with imports skyrocketing by 129.83% to reach US$ 279.83 million. The United States and Germany also remained key markets, with imports of US$ 1,059.70 million and US$ 459.56 million, respectively, though both experienced declines.
