Ghana Hosts First WRAP Training To Boost Apparel Exports

Ghana has achieved a significant milestone in its garment and textile industry with the successful completion of the first-ever WRAP Technical Assistance Training of Trainers workshop in Accra on June 11, 2025. Organized by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MoTAI) with support from GIZ’s “Invest for Jobs” programme, the two-day event marked a regional first in West Africa.

In his closing remarks, Deputy Minister Sampson Ahi described the initiative as a strategic step toward building a sustainable, export-ready apparel sector. The training aims to develop a pool of certified WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) Technical Assistants to help local factories meet international labour, environmental, and ethical standards.

“WRAP certification is no longer optional; it is essential for global competitiveness,” Ahi said, warning that without compliance, Ghana risks losing access to international apparel markets. Currently, only two Ghanaian factories are WRAP-certified, with more in the pipeline.

The initiative is expected to make certification more affordable and reduce dependency on foreign auditors, positioning Ghanaian manufacturers to integrate more effectively into global supply chains.

The Deputy Minister also highlighted Ghana’s Vision 2033 for the industry, which targets over $2 billion in exports and 150,000 direct jobs. With West Africa’s largest garment factory already operational and a new 200,000 sq. ft. facility underway, Ghana is poised to become a regional manufacturing hub.

John Duti, team leader for the programme, emphasized the sub-sector’s evolution from home-based tailoring to structured factory production and praised its potential for youth employment and economic transformation.
