Textile Industry Can Cut Microfibre Leakage By 95% By 2032

A new report by Earth Action, developed in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, has revealed that global textile production generates approximately 92,000 tonnes of microfibre losses annually, while highlighting that coordinated industry action could reduce production-phase microfibre leakage by as much as 95 per cent by 2032.

The study titled ‘From Shedding to Solutions: A Global Assessment of Microfibre Emissions and Reduction Opportunities in Textile Production’, provides what the authors describe as the first system-level assessment of microfibre emissions during textile manufacturing, a stage that has received far less attention than consumer laundering despite accounting for a significant share of total microfibre pollution.

The report estimates that textile production currently generates over 92 kilotonnes of microfibre losses annually, equivalent to around 670 mg of fibres for every kilogramme of textile produced. After accounting for existing wastewater treatment infrastructure, environmental leakage is estimated at 58 kilotonnes per year, including 17 kilotonnes entering aquatic environments and 41 kilotonnes reaching terrestrial ecosystems, largely through sludge disposal pathways.

According to the analysis, current industrial and municipal wastewater treatment systems already prevent approximately 37 per cent of microfibre losses from reaching the environment, intercepting around 34 kilotonnes of fibres annually.

The study identifies product design and specification as one of the most significant yet underutilized opportunities for reducing microfibre emissions. Research cited in the report indicates that relatively small modifications in textile construction, finishing chemistry and fabric structure can reduce intrinsic shedding by 60 to 90 per cent in certain polyester-based textiles.

Beyond product design, the report highlights sludge management as a critical intervention point. Ensuring controlled disposal of captured fibres through engineered landfills or incineration could reduce total environmental leakage by an estimated 43 per cent, even without changes to wastewater treatment infrastructure.

The authors conclude that the greatest reductions will come from a combination of upstream and downstream measures, including improved textile design, manufacturing process optimization, expanded wastewater treatment coverage and effective sludge containment. Under a high-ambition scenario, these combined interventions could reduce microfibre leakage by up to 95 per cent by 2032.

The report also underscores the need for better industry data, particularly stronger links between product specifications, manufacturing processes and measured shedding rates. While current data gaps limit precision, the authors note that the overall direction of the findings remains clear: reducing microfibre pollution requires a coordinated, system-wide approach spanning product design, production processes, wastewater treatment and end-of-pipe management.

For the textile industry, the report reinforces a growing consensus that tackling microfibre pollution cannot rely on a single solution. Instead, meaningful progress will depend on integrating emission reduction strategies throughout the textile value chain from fibre and fabric engineering to wastewater and waste management systems.
