West Bengal Plans Textile Hub To Boost Handloom And Artisan Sector

West Bengal plans to set up a textile hub to support local weavers, artisans and textile workers and connect their products with domestic and international markets, state urban development and municipal affairs minister Agnimitra Paul said.

Paul said the proposed hub would provide artisans with infrastructure and opportunities to improve their skills while helping them gain better access to exporters and traders.

“Bengal has a rich tradition of handloom and textile industry. We have Fulia’s handloom, Santipur’s handloom, Bishnupur’s Baluchari and Murshidabad’s silk. There are many examples of the state’s art and tradition,” she said.

“We will try to build a hub where textile artisans can improve their art and hone their skills, along with working there,” Paul added.

The minister said the initiative aims to showcase West Bengal’s handloom and textile heritage on a larger platform and create stronger links between artisans and markets.

“Our purpose is to present Bengal’s handloom and textile industry on a larger scale by creating connections with international-standard infrastructure and markets,” she said.

The proposed hub is expected to provide a platform for artisans to strengthen their skills, improve market access and connect directly with exporters and traders.

West Bengal has several established handloom and textile clusters, including Fulia and Santipur for handloom, Bishnupur for Baluchari sarees and Murshidabad for silk, which form an important part of the state’s traditional textile heritage.
