Yagi Develops Full Traceability Tool For Indian Organic Cotton

Yagi & Co has developed a proprietary system for consistent traceability from cotton field to yarn, via a proprietary management system that links the international certifications for Indian organic cotton.

According to the Japanese company, there are several international certifications and standards for organic cotton. These begin with cotton ginning to ensure traceability for yarn, fabrics, and the final product.

“However, for processes at the cotton farming stage, the certification standard for organic agricultural products is applied,” the company said.

Existence of these two different certifications makes it difficult to achieve consistent traceability management of organic cotton products.

“In the past, there were cases in which large-scale fraud came to light related to organic cotton in India, the world’s largest producer country of organic cotton,” the Japanese company stated.

The company developed a proprietary management system that links the two international certifications for the organic cotton produced in India.

“This system enables consistent traceability from cotton field to yarn. Through this system, transparent traceability for 85 percent or more of organic cotton can be handled from field to yarn,” the company claimed.

Yagi & Co started distribution of products under its own brand ‘Unito Organic’ which covers yarn, textile and garments and provide certifications of this tool to customers purchasing applicable organic cotton from them.

Yagi is a GOTS member since 2006 and is one of Japan’s top companies in terms of the volume of internationally certified organic cotton handled.

Additionally they participate in activities to support the conversion to organic farming for cotton farmers in India and have worked to establish sustainable frameworks of organic cotton.
