NIFT Mumbai Expands Campus, Holds Convocation 2025
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Mumbai, inaugurated its newly constructed academic buildings alongside Convocation 2025, marking a major milestone in its growth as a premier design and fashion institution.
The event was graced by Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs, who inaugurated Academic Buildings I, II, III and the Multi-Purpose Hall at the institute’s Kharghar campus. The upgraded academic complex, spanning 8,352 sq. m, features advanced classrooms, design laboratories, and a 500-seat auditorium to enhance creative learning and research.
In his address, the Minister emphasized India’s rapid rise as a global textile and fashion hub, powered by transformative initiatives such as the PM MITRA Parks, the National Technical Textiles Mission, and the government’s focus on sustainability and competitiveness.
“The world of fashion today is shifting from commercial success to conscious creation,” said Margherita. “India’s fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities is redefining sustainable fashion on the global stage.”
At the convocation ceremony, 312 students from NIFT Mumbai and 29 from NIFT Daman were conferred undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, with special awards presented for academic excellence and innovation.
The event was attended by Tanu Kashyap, IAS, Director General, NIFT, Khushal Jangid, Director, NIFT Mumbai, Brijesh Deore, Director, NIFT Daman, Vidhushekhar P., CAC-NIFT Daman and Manjula Tiwari, CEO of Cover Story Clothing Ltd and NIFT alumna.
Minister Margherita also conferred PhD degrees upon Dr. Susmita Das (NIFT Mumbai) and Dr. Amisha Mehta (NIFT Gandhinagar) for their research contributions.
The inauguration and convocation together highlight NIFT Mumbai’s commitment to nurturing design excellence, innovation, and sustainability, aligning closely with India’s vision of becoming a global textile and fashion leader.
