Jaypore Highlights 700-Year-Old Tangaliya Craft At Bharat Tex 2026

Jaypore, the artisanal lifestyle brand from Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, showcased the heritage of Tangaliya weaving through a live loom demonstration at Bharat Tex 2026.

The demonstration was led by Rathod Baldevbhai Jahabhai, a fifth-generation weaver from Vastadi village in Gujarat’s Surendranagar region. Tangaliya is a 700-year-old indigenous craft traditionally practised by the Dangasia community, who historically created warm shawls and wraps for pastoral Bharwad shepherds.

Working on a pit loom, Baldevbhai demonstrated the technique of creating the craft’s distinctive raised danas, or bead-like dots, directly within the weave. The dots are formed by hand as the fabric is woven, without embroidery, printing or templates. A single Tangaliya piece can take between 15 and 25 days to complete.

“Tangaliya is a craft that gently commands you to slow down and notice the quiet devotion resting within every single raised dot,” said Vandana Gupta, Creative Head, Jaypore. She added that the brand’s collaboration with weavers from Vastadi village began in 2024 and aims to provide greater visibility to artisan clusters while preserving the integrity of traditional craft techniques.

Alongside Tangaliya, Jaypore’s Bharat Tex presentation featured a range of Indian craft traditions, including Jamdani, Ikat, Ajrakh, Chikankari, Dabu, Kantha, Shibori, Dokra and handwoven textiles.
