Bangladesh Targets US$ 150 Bn Exports Through Sector-Focused Growth

Bangladesh aims to increase its annual exports to US$ 150 billion from the current US$ 50–55 billion by strengthening five to seven high-potential sectors, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir has said.
Speaking at a consultation workshop in Dhaka, the minister emphasised the need for targeted sectoral development, skills enhancement, innovation and technology adoption as the country prepares for graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category.
He said the government is working with international partners to develop the leather and light engineering industries into globally recognised skill development hubs, while also promoting greater value addition across key export sectors.
Highlighting opportunities in the jute industry, Muktadir said shifting from raw fibre exports to diversified jute products and technical textiles could significantly boost export earnings.
The workshop reviewed a study on the competitiveness of Bangladesh’s emerging private sectors and discussed measures to strengthen export capabilities in the post-LDC era.
Commerce Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Khan said the ministry is preparing a Tk 3,000 crore integrated project to support export expansion through business environment reforms, digitalisation and improved policy implementation. The initiative will be implemented through the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and incorporate recommendations from private-sector stakeholders.
