Bezos Earth Fund Commits US$ 34 Million To Next-Gen Sustainable Fashion Materials

Bezos Earth Fund has announced US$ 34 million in new grants to accelerate the development of next-generation sustainable materials for the fashion and textile industry.

The funding will support research across leading institutions, including Columbia University, University of California, Berkeley, and Clemson University, focusing on innovations such as bacteria-grown fibres, biodegradable silk alternatives, and genetically enhanced cotton with built-in colour and improved resilience.

The initiative aims to create materials that match or exceed the performance of conventional fabrics like rayon, silk and cotton, while reducing environmental impact. The fund also allocated support to Cotton Foundation to restore a global non-GMO cotton seed bank.

Vice Chair Lauren Sánchez Bezos highlighted the transformative potential of emerging material science, noting that innovations such as bioengineered fibres and compost-derived textiles could redefine the future of fashion.

The programme builds on the fund’s earlier sustainable fashion initiatives and reflects a broader push to address the industry’s environmental footprint, with materials and production processes accounting for a significant share of emissions, water use and waste.
