Jharkhand’s Tribal Textiles Find New Life In Contemporary Fashion

In a growing shift toward culturally rooted fashion, Jharkhand’s tribal textiles and indigenous art forms are moving from village walls and local traditions into mainstream wardrobes, blending heritage with modern design.

Leading this transformation is Ranchi-based initiative Johargram, which is reimagining traditional Sohrai art and tribal textile motifs into contemporary garments, stoles, jackets and fashion accessories. Once limited to rural households, these intricate designs are now being adapted for urban consumers seeking authenticity and cultural expression in fashion.

Sohrai painting, traditionally used to decorate village walls, is being reinterpreted into wearable art, reflecting a wider trend where young consumers are increasingly drawn to clothing that carries cultural meaning alongside modern aesthetics.

Founder and NIFT graduate Ashish Satyavrat Sahu said the idea emerged from the lack of visibility given to Jharkhand’s rich tribal textile heritage in mainstream fashion. His vision was to bring regional identity to global platforms through contemporary design while preserving its traditional essence.

Today, Johargram has become a creative hub for designers, filmmakers and fashion enthusiasts seeking distinctive, heritage-inspired collections. The initiative is also creating opportunities for students and young professionals, offering hands-on experience in design, branding and business operations while working with local artisans.

Beyond fashion, the project is strengthening livelihoods in tribal communities by integrating indigenous craftsmanship with modern retail demand.

As tribal-inspired fashion gains popularity among younger audiences, Jharkhand’s traditional textiles are evolving from cultural heritage into a contemporary style statement bridging the gap between local identity and global fashion trends.
