Jute Symposium In Ahmedabad Highlights Sustainable Solutions
The National Jute Board (NJB), in collaboration with the Ahmedabad Textile Industry’s Research Association (ATIRA), hosted a National Symposium titled “Jute: Sustainable Solutions Through Technological Advancements” on September 18, 2024. The day-long event took place at the J.B. Auditorium, Ahmedabad Management Association.
The symposium aimed to raise awareness and promote jute-based technical textiles, highlighting their eco-friendly nature and potential applications in addressing geotechnical challenges in civil engineering. Under the Jute Product Development Scheme (JPDS), ATIRA showcased developments in jute fibre-based composites for porta cabins and prosthetic limbs.
The event featured eight stalls displaying a variety of jute products, including handicrafts. Padma Awardee Kartikeya Vikram Sarabhai attended as the Chief Guest, while Padma Awardee Prof. Anil K. Gupta, Founder of GIAN and faculty at IIM-A, delivered the keynote address. P.R. Patelia, Special Secretary, Government of Gujarat, emphasized the importance of geotextiles in construction.
Participants included jute industry representatives, manufacturers from the composite and automotive sectors, and esteemed researchers and professors from institutions such as NIFT, NID and IIT, Gandhinagar. The symposium facilitated technical presentations and panel discussions, reflecting the growing momentum for jute in non-jute growing states like Gujarat.
Delegates from the Government of India and officials from the Roads and Building Department, along with representatives from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, convened to explore advancements, new applications and market trends aimed at increasing the adoption of jute fibres and diversified jute products.
