LCAS-2025: Pioneering Life Cycle Assessment In India’s Technical Textiles

The Life Cycle Assessment Summit (LCAS-2025), organized by SASMIRA, concluded successfully on January 9–10, 2025, at SASMIRA, Worli, Mumbai. The two-day event marked a significant milestone in promoting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) practices in India’s technical textiles sector, emphasizing sustainability and global competitiveness. Sanjay Savkare, Minister of Textiles, Government of Maharashtra, inaugurated the summit, highlighting the critical role of sustainability and innovation in advancing India’s infrastructure and textile industries.

Prominent policymakers and leaders attended the event, including Rajeev Saxena, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, GoI, Roop Rashi, Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, GoI, Anshu Sinha, IAS, Principal Secretary, Textiles, Government of Maharashtra and Ashok Malhotra, Mission Director, National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), Ministry of Textiles, GoI.

LCAS-2025, held under the aegis of the National Technical Textiles Mission and supported by the Maharashtra Government’s Department of Textiles, provided a platform to advance sustainable practices within the technical textiles ecosystem.

A key highlight of the event was the introduction of groundbreaking technologies. SASMIRA, in collaboration with Lohia Corp Ltd., unveiled circular weaving technology for seamless tubular geotextiles, addressing challenges in soil reinforcement and infrastructure development. Another notable innovation was the reusable period panty by Eve Essential, a SASMIRA-supported start-up offering sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions.

The summit also celebrated excellence in the field of technical textiles. Industry leaders, including Yogesh K. Kusumgar, Raj Kumar Lohia, Vayu Garware, Mayoor Gandhi, Sanjay Tibrewala and Anjani Prasad, were honoured for their contributions. Manish Raval received recognition for start-up excellence, while Sanjay Saini, Scientist D at SASMIRA, was awarded for his achievements in research and innovation.

LCAS-2025 featured technical sessions on LCA frameworks, advanced manufacturing technologies and sustainability, with participation from leading organizations such as Ecoinvent, Sphera, Mitsubishi Chemicals, Grasim Industries, Saurer, Truetzschler, LMW, Teijin, Lenzing, and Dow Chemicals. The event also included an industry exhibition showcasing innovative technologies and sustainable solutions, engaging policymakers, researchers and business leaders.

Supported by the Maharashtra State Co-operative Textile Federation Ltd., Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), and Reliance Industries Ltd., the summit highlighted the need for LCA adoption to meet global sustainability standards and improve India’s competitiveness in technical textiles.

LCAS-2025 marks the beginning of a transformative era for India’s technical textiles, aligning the sector with global best practices and driving innovation, sustainability and progress.
