Tamil Nadu To Unveil New Textile Policy Within 10 Days

The Tamil Nadu government will release a new textile policy within the next 10 days, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles R. Gandhi announced on Tuesday. He also stated that a separate project for the powerloom sector will be introduced in the upcoming state budget.
The minister, along with Electricity, Prohibition, and Excise Minister V. Senthil Balaji, inaugurated a five-day entrepreneurship development programme on technical textiles under the National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM) at the South India Textile Research Association (SITRA). The event, organized in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Department of Textiles, aims to support entrepreneurs in the sector.
Gandhi highlighted that the state government had approved 17 proposals for setting up mini textile parks, with eight in Karur and five in Tirupur. He also mentioned the launch of a 6% interest subvention scheme to modernize spinning machinery, aimed at enhancing the competitiveness and productivity of the textile industry. The Rs 500 crore initiative will be implemented over the next decade.
Speaking on skill development in technical textiles, Gandhi noted that entrepreneurs undergoing training will receive financial assistance, with the central government providing Rs 10,000 and the state government contributing an additional Rs 5,000.
Meanwhile, addressing reporters, Senthil Balaji announced that the government had canceled the global tender for smart meter procurement and would soon initiate a retender. “Once the installation of smart meters is completed, we will introduce a monthly billing system for domestic electricity consumers,” he stated.
