Textile Recycling Innovator SaXcell Signs MoU with Birla Cellulose

SaXcell, a pioneer in textile recycling, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Birla Cellulose, a part of the Aditya Birla Group and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of man-made cellulosic fiber.

This MoU marks the beginning of an extended collaboration between the two companies aimed at producing recycled man-made cellulosic fibers. SaXcell’s textile waste pulping technology, when combined with Birla’s advanced wet spinning expertise, results in the creation of high-quality and sustainable “SaXcell” recycled fibers. These fibers are designed to meet the circular textile requirements of customers on a commercial scale.

Commenting on this development, Erik van der Weerd, CEO of SaXcell, emphasized that this partnership aligns with SaXcell’s vision of establishing a robust circular textile supply chain through collaboration and mutual commitment. He explained, “To address the current social and environmental challenges in the textile industry, global collaboration is imperative. We need to transition from a linear to a circular economy, and we need to do it now. The combined innovation and production capabilities of SaXcell and Birla offer a significant opportunity to make a real impact.”

Discussing this collaborative effort focused on circularity and sustainability, Dr. Aspi Patel, Chief Technology Officer of Aditya Birla Group and Birla Cellulose, noted, “Birla Cellulose is strongly committed to supporting innovators in expanding circular fiber offerings within the textile and non-woven value chain. We have been exploring innovative business models and partnerships, and this collaboration is one such initiative where we aim to assist SaXcell in scaling up from a pilot to a commercial demonstration level. Such partnerships will play an increasingly important role in accelerating circularity in the global textile value chain.”
