Delhi Government To Launch Clothing Recycling Programme At 10 Metro Stations

The Delhi government will soon roll out a clothing recycling programme across 10 major Delhi Metro stations, enabling commuters to deposit old and unused garments for recycling and reuse, according to an official release.

The initiative, being launched under the direction of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, will involve the installation of dedicated collection boxes by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) at selected stations across the capital.

The collected garments will be processed through recycling and upcycling channels to create useful products, as part of the government’s efforts to address growing textile waste and promote responsible disposal practices.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government is focused on building a cleaner and more environmentally responsible capital.

“Textile waste is among the rapidly growing environmental challenges, and this initiative will ensure the scientific recycling of old clothes. This effort will not only reduce waste but also strengthen sustainable development,” she said.

The 10 Metro stations identified for the programme are Shahdara, Mohan Estate, Rohini West, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Hauz Khas, Punjabi Bagh West, Dwarka, and Shalimar Bagh. These locations were selected by DMRC’s Operations Department following operational and security reviews.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging public participation in recycling while creating awareness about textile reuse and sustainable consumption.

According to the government, collected garments will be segregated into different categories and distributed to reputed non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and self-help groups (SHGs) for reuse and upcycling into products such as bags, rugs, and other utility items.

DMRC will also provide designated spaces at selected Metro stations for displaying and selling these upcycled products.

Clothes that cannot be reused will be sent to recycling facilities for conversion into recycled yarn, fibre, and non-woven felt, ensuring minimal waste generation.

DMRC’s Civil (O&M) Department has already initiated discussions with recycling agencies, and one company has expressed interest in installing the collection boxes. Site inspections at the identified stations have also been completed.

The collection points will be branded under the Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organisation (DMLWO). Formalities related to installation, branding, and the signing of a memorandum of understanding are currently being finalised.

The project is expected to be formally launched once the procedural process is completed.
