BGMEA Seeks Support Amid US$ 400 Mln Apparel Loss

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) announced that the country’s apparel sector has regained stability following a turbulent period marked by labour unrest. At a press conference in Dhaka, BGMEA President Khandaker Rafiqul Islam acknowledged the cooperation of the government, factory owners, workers, the Bangladesh Army, and law enforcement agencies in averting a crisis.

Rafiqul revealed that the industry incurred a production loss of US$ 400 million due to labour unrest since late August, which led some buyers to temporarily shift orders. “We expect buyers to return as normalcy is restored,” he said. He noted that 39 factories had failed to pay wages for September, prompting the BGMEA to request interest-free loans with flexible terms from the government.

The trade body urged the government to strengthen law and order in the sector and streamline customs and port operations to avoid delays, especially at the Chattogram port. It also requested a three-month suspension on utility disconnections to keep factories running smoothly.

Expressing concern over banking sector reforms, Rafiqul emphasized the need to ensure these changes do not hinder production and trade. He proposed forming a task force involving the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and Bangladesh Bank to draft policies favorable to the industry.

The BGMEA also called for:

  • Approval for gas cylinder supplies from CNG stations amid energy shortages.
  • Uninterrupted disposal of waste materials to support sustainable operations.
  • Retention of cash incentives for the sector post-LDC graduation.
  • A “safe exit policy” for struggling entrepreneurs to wind down operations without legal complications.

Senior Vice-President Abdullah Hill Rakib and other board members were present at the event. The BGMEA’s appeal underscores the sector’s need for continued government support to remain competitive and sustain growth.
