GEXIM Pledges Support For Ghana’s Garment And Textile Industry

The Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the garment, textile, and apparel industry as part of its efforts to drive employment and industrial growth under the government’s proposed 24-hour economy policy.

Sylvester Mensah, Acting Chief Executive of GEXIM, made this announcement during a working visit with the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness & Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare to the manufacturing facilities of Dignity DTRT Ltd and Tex Styles Ghana Ltd—makers of Vlisco, GTP, and Woodin—in Accra and Tema on February 10, 2025.

Highlighting the potential of the garment sector, Mensah stated, “The garment sub-sector has significant potential to generate employment and foreign exchange, which is crucial for stabilizing the cedi. This visit enables us to better understand the operations of these companies, assess their challenges, and explore ways to provide support to help them scale up.”

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare reinforced the government’s commitment to fostering private sector growth and enhancing Ghana’s industrialization efforts.

“We recognize the importance of the garment sector in job creation and exports. We are open to discussions on how best to support the industry and replicate successful models across different regions,” she noted.

Industry stakeholders welcomed the engagement and raised concerns about key challenges such as access to financing, market expansion and policy implementation.

Agyenim-Boateng, Managing Director of Tex Styles Ghana Ltd, and Skip Richmond, Founder and Co-CEO of DTRT Group, acknowledged the government’s efforts and called for sustained collaboration to remove industry bottlenecks.

The working visit followed a series of stakeholder meetings on the same day, where the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness & Industry engaged industry players, including Volta Star Textiles Ltd (VSTL), Akosombo Industrial Company Ltd (AICL), Tex Styles Ghana Ltd (TSGL), and Dignity DTRT Ltd. Discussions centered on strategies to strengthen the garment sector’s role in economic growth and employment generation.

While the government has outlined ambitious plans for industrial development, industry experts stress that sustained policy implementation, infrastructure support and a favourable business climate will be crucial in realizing these objectives.
