France Brings Garment Repair Back To Fashion Education

A new clothing repair school in France is placing garment repair at the centre of fashion education, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to develop skills that can extend the life of clothing.

The initiative reflects the growing importance of repair, alteration and garment maintenance as fashion brands and retailers expand after-sales services and look for ways to improve product longevity.

The school provides specialised training in garment assessment, alterations, visible and invisible mending, fabric restoration and finishing techniques. Students learn how to preserve the quality, functionality and appearance of garments that might otherwise be discarded.

The 11-month programme, launched in September 2025 in Roubaix with an inaugural cohort of 20 students, combines hands-on repair training with fashion history, entrepreneurship and industry placements. Students also gain practical experience through internships with established fashion companies.

Although the programme does not currently award a state-recognised diploma, graduates receive professional certification and training designed to prepare them for careers in garment repair and related services.

The initiative also positions repair as more than a corrective service, highlighting its role in extending product lifespans, reducing waste and creating additional value across the fashion value chain. Students are encouraged to consider durability, maintenance and aftercare alongside design and production.

The growing interest in repair services from brands, retailers and independent businesses is creating demand for trained specialists with both technical and practical expertise.

By bringing repair skills into structured fashion education, the French initiative aims to preserve traditional craftsmanship while preparing a new generation of professionals for emerging opportunities in a more circular and resource-efficient fashion industry.
