Bharat Tex Will Continue To Be A Key Driver for Textile Industry’s Growth and Global Positioning: S. Periasamy

Bharat Tex 2025, India’s largest global textile event, has set a new benchmark in industry engagement, innovation, and sustainability. The second edition of the event featured dedicated exhibitions for various textile segments, insightful knowledge sessions and a significant presence of international buyers. S. Periasamy shared his insights on the evolving landscape of the Indian textile industry and the role of Bharat Tex 2025 in shaping its future.
Highlighting the well-organized format of Bharat Tex 2025, Periasamy noted that the event provided dedicated exhibition spaces for different textile categories, making it easier for visitors to explore specific sectors. “For every group of textiles, whether technical textiles, home textiles, or fabrics—there is a separate hall. This structured approach has been very effective,” he said.
The presence of international buyers was another key highlight. “This time, foreign buyers have shown a keen interest, visiting stalls with specific requirements. This reflects the growing global recognition of Indian textiles,” he added.
Periasamy emphasized the importance of the knowledge sessions organized by KPMG and other industry experts. These sessions featured both national and international speakers, covering a range of critical topics. “One of the most important discussions was about sustainability regulations and standards. Experts from IKEA and other global brands participated, addressing the challenges faced by exporters in meeting evolving standards,” he said.
A notable development was the launch of a UNIDO initiative, selecting eight textile clusters in India for World Bank-funded sustainability programmes. “This is a significant step toward fostering sustainable growth in India’s textile sector,” Periasamy remarked.
The discussion also covered the upcoming European sustainability mandates, particularly the Eco-design Sustainable Product Regulation (ESPR) and the Digital Product Passport (DPP). “From next year, any product entering Europe must comply with digital product passports, making traceability and lifecycle assessment (LCA) mandatory,” he explained.
One of the most exciting aspects of the exhibition was the focus on digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI). Periasamy highlighted Frontier.cool, an innovative digitalization platform that allows fabric samples to be scanned and instantly transformed into virtual garments. “This reduces the need for physical samples, cutting waste and saving costs,” he explained.
AI is also making its mark in textile manufacturing, particularly in digital printing technologies. “I saw AI-powered printing systems that significantly speed up the sample development process,” he noted.
The integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) was another major highlight. “With AR/VR, buyers can now visualize entire textile collections virtually before placing orders, reducing physical sampling and making the process more efficient,” Periasamy said.
The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) has played a crucial role in fostering innovation. “NTTM is providing grants of Rs 50 lakh for innovators in technical textiles, encouraging new developments in the field,” he stated. The exhibition showcased numerous advancements in technical textiles, underlining India’s growing capabilities in this high-value sector.
Periasamy acknowledged that Bharat Tex has successfully brought together key stakeholders, industry leaders, and global buyers. However, he also pointed out areas for improvement. “The event should provide better representation for small-scale manufacturers, such as handloom weavers, by facilitating market linkages and participation in discussions,” he suggested.
He also emphasized the need for international buyer-seller meets. “We are planning to take Indian exporters to European countries for direct engagement with buyers. This will help them develop unique products without internal competition, ensuring better market access,” he explained.
Reflecting on the overall impact of Bharat Tex 2025, Periasamy expressed optimism about its role in shaping the Indian textile industry’s future. “The government, particularly the Ministry of Textiles, has done an excellent job in organizing this event. The enthusiasm among participants shows that Bharat Tex will continue to be a key driver for the industry’s growth and global positioning,” he concluded.
