IAF Urges Tariff Rollback, Calls For Stability In Global Apparel Trade

The International Apparel Federation (IAF), representing manufacturers across 40+ countries, has raised strong concerns over the U.S. administration’s punitive tariffs imposed on April 2. The federation warns these measures threaten global apparel supply chains, destabilize economies, and jeopardize millions of jobs worldwide.
While the suspension of some tariffs is welcomed, continued duties on Chinese imports remain a serious concern. The IAF cautions that such trade actions could escalate, further disrupting a sector already strained by the pandemic, Red Sea crisis, and low consumer confidence.
“High tariffs won’t restore trade balance or bring back large-scale apparel manufacturing to the U.S.,” the IAF stated. It urged policymakers to prioritize realistic trade goals and industry stability over protectionist measures.
The IAF called on brands and retailers to support manufacturers through long-term sourcing partnerships and fair pricing, essential for building resilient, sustainable supply chains. Abrupt policy shifts, it warned, undermine investment and trust across the value chain.
Reaffirming its commitment to global collaboration, the IAF pledged to intensify support for manufacturers and associations worldwide. “Trade is the backbone of our industry. Only unity and strategic partnerships can lead us through this uncertainty,” it said.
