Ministry Of Textiles Hosts Seminar On New Age Fibres

Ministry of Textiles organized a national seminar on New Age Fibres – Innovation, Research and the Road Ahead in New Delhi, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, startups and academia to discuss the future of sustainable fibres in India’s textile sector.
The seminar was inaugurated by Giriraj Singh, who highlighted the strategic importance of new-age fibres in promoting sustainability, reducing environmental impact and generating employment opportunities. He said these fibres would play a key role in achieving the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat while supporting India’s sustainable development commitments.
Pabitra Margherita, Neelam Shami Rao and senior government officials also attended the event, which was organized through the National Jute Board.
The seminar focused on emerging sustainable fibres including pineapple fibre, flax fibre, bamboo fibre, hemp fibre, banana fibre, ramie fibre, nettle fibre, kapok fibre and milkweed fibre. These fibres are increasingly being recognized for their eco-friendly and biodegradable properties and their potential to support agricultural diversification and rural livelihoods.
The event also featured the inauguration of the “New Age Fibres Expo,” showcasing products and technologies based on natural fibres. During the programme, the Ministry launched a New Age Fibres booklet along with reports prepared by three task forces studying various fibre categories and development opportunities.
A series of thematic sessions discussed policy frameworks, fibre extraction technologies, commercialization challenges, entrepreneurship opportunities and long-term strategies for scaling up production and processing of new-age fibres in India.
Industry representatives and researchers emphasized the need for stronger research and development, institutional coordination, supply chain development, quality standardization and export promotion to position India as a global leader in sustainable textile innovation by 2030.
The recommendations and deliberations from the seminar are expected to contribute towards a comprehensive policy framework for the development of India’s new-age fibre ecosystem.
