Slight Capacity Growth and Lower Fiber Consumption
The International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) has released its International Textile Industry Statistics (ITIS) for 2023, covering productive capacity and raw materials consumption in the short-staple spinning mill sector across global textile-producing countries. The data was calculated using a new method and includes a review of past time series.
In 2023, the global number of installed short-staple spindles reached 232 million units, while the number of installed open-end rotors grew to 9.7 million. Capacity expansion remains focused in Asia, with air-jet spindles increasing to 637,000 units. Outside Asia, Türkiye saw the most significant capacity growth. The number of installed shuttle-less looms rose to 1.7 million units.
Total raw material consumption in the short-staple organized sector slightly declined to 43 million tons. Raw cotton consumption decreased by 4.4%, and cellulosic short-staple fiber consumption fell by 2.9%. However, the consumption of synthetic short-staple fibers increased by 0.5%.
