India’s Premium Kasturi Cotton Initiative Set To Elevate India’s Global Textile Standing

As global supply chains increasingly shift toward sustainable and ethical sourcing, the rollout of Kasturi Cotton India marks a significant transition from a volume-driven commodities market to a value-driven textile economy, writes Kirankumar Panchal in this exclusive article for Textile Insights

In a strategic move to position Indian cotton alongside global premium brands such as Egyptian Giza and American Pima, the Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and the textile industry, has officially rolled out the ‘Kasturi Cotton India’ initiative.

The programme introduces a stringent quality enforcement and traceability framework designed to enhance the competitiveness of Indian cotton in international markets.

Addressing the Quality Gap
Historically, despite being one of the world’s largest producers of cotton, India has faced challenges related to inconsistent quality, contamination and the lack of a strong global brand identity. The Kasturi Cotton initiative directly addresses these issues by certifying only long-staple cotton that meets rigorous benchmark standards.

Under the new guidelines, certified cotton must adhere to specific parameters:

  • Staple length: Minimum 29 mm to 30 mm
  • Micronaire value: Optimum fineness and maturity levels to ensure superior spinning quality
  • Contamination levels: Strict control over trash and foreign contaminants, a major concern for international buyers

End-to-End Traceability and Blockchain Integration
To ensure complete transparency, the initiative leverages advanced blockchain technology and QR-code tracking. Every bale of Kasturi Cotton will be traceable from the farm and ginning mill to the final textile product.

“Traceability is no longer a luxury but a necessity in the global supply chain,” an industry expert said. “Brands in the US and EU increasingly demand visibility into the origin of their raw materials. Kasturi Cotton provides that verified traceability.”

Institutional Backing & Market Impact
The brand is being promoted by Texprocil (The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council) in collaboration with apex industry and trade bodies. By branding India’s premium cotton, the government aims to secure a 5% to 10% price premium for Indian farmers and ginners, thereby boosting rural incomes.

The initiative also aligns with India’s broader goal of achieving $250 billion in textile production by 2030. Industry analysts believe that a homegrown premium cotton brand could significantly reduce domestic manufacturers’ reliance on imported high-end cotton varieties.

Looking Ahead
As global supply chains increasingly shift toward sustainable and ethical sourcing, the rollout of Kasturi Cotton India marks a significant transition from a volume-driven commodities market to a value-driven textile economy.

The Ministry of Textiles plans to launch international trade roadshows later this year to introduce the certified brand to major textile and garment hubs across Europe, Asia and North America.
